After Yahoo announced PayPal president Scott Thompson would be its CEO, we called and emailed a bunch of well-placed sources in Silicon Valley to see what they thought of the news.Their unvarnished reaction:

The Yahoo exec: “He sounds like a nice guy. It’s so not what we need. We need a fucking animal to come in and change this company.”

The former PayPal exec: “He is from Visa. That is why PayPal stopped innovating. It hired a bunch of bank execs.”

The e-commerce CEO: “Never heard of him – seems like a very odd choice.”

The big startup board member: “Don’t know him, but he had better be a damn good manager to compensate for his lack of consumer web and monetization experience.”

The big-time VC partner: “It’s far from being an inspired choice.  I’ve heard he’s more viewed as an engineering manager, not a product guy. That’s an important role. But Yahoo doesn’t need a better run engineering organisation. It needs a smaller one. It needs clarity of focus.”

We reached out to new Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson for this story.
