Yahoo fired 2,000 people today and re-organised into three core businesses: media and communications, platforms, and data. The big winner?

Ross Levinsohn.

For one, he still has a job.

For another, it’s a big and important job.

As the leader of Yahoo’s “core media and communications” team, reporting to CEO Scott Thompson, Levinsohn is going to be supervising Yahoo’s two most important assets – its email business and its front page.

Prior to today, Yahoo’s email product and other communication tools (like IntoNow, on mobile) reported into Yahoo’s product boss, Blake Irving.

Yahoo’s product division has been dissolved. This makes Irving’s future with the company unclear.
