Looking to raise capital for your startup? Well, you could make the rounds to New York’s growing circle of angel investors and venture capitalists. Network like heck, call in favours, schedule meetings, and make your case, again and again.Pandora founder Tim Westergren pitched more than 300 investors when starting out. Fun, right?
Or you could get your startup in front of a group of active, successful venture investors in one hour flat. How?
Enter Business Insider’s business-plan competition. It takes about an hour to complete the online form, and submissions are due March 31. Entries are vetted by a panel of VC judges, and the winner scores $75,000 in cash and prizes for her or his company. Buh-duh bing, buh-duh boom.
The competition runs concurrently with Startup 2012, BI’s major annual conference on entrepreneurship, taking place May 3 in New York City. Startup is an intense, fun day focused on issues crucial to entrepreneurship like product development, pivots, hiring, and funding. Tickets are available now, and there are about five tickets for the ultra-cheap $125 early rate still available, but not for long. If you miss that rate, don’t worry: there’s a special discounted rate for startups, too. Everyone passionate about innovation, whether startup, investor, intra-preneur, service provider, or other inno-junkie, is invited to attend Startup. Here are some incredible people you’ll hear from:
- Jason Goldberg, CEO, Fab.com
- Alex Himel, Engineering Manager, Facebook
- Philip James, CEO, Lot18
- Sahil Lavingia, CEO, Gumroad
- Ben Milne, CEO, Dwolla
- and more! Keep checking our speaker faculty for updates.
Finalists in the business-plan competition will present onstage at Startup and get interviewed by VCs. The winner gets to pose next to an absurdly large foam-core check and bring home a huge goody bag of cash and prizes for their growing company. And winners can go on to an exciting exit: the 2010 winner, Redbeacon, was acquired by Home Depot this year for an amount that left them “very pleased.”

See you in May!
