If you believe that a groundhog can predict the weather, the Punxsutawney Phil said there will be six more weeks of winter.According to the lore, if Punxsutawney Phil—the most prominent groundhog who lives in Punxsutawney, PA, and is designated to be the decider for such things—leaves his burrow and doesn’t immediately run back inside spring will come early. However, if he sees his shadow and runs away, then there will be six more weeks of winter weather.

The President of the organisation that cares for Phil interpreted his decision, explaining that he said: “Many shadows do I see.”

This event is generally thought to be descended from an old Pennsylvania German tradition, however there are now many celebrations which occur outside Punxsutawney. The popularity of that one Pennsylvania town was cemented in the 1993 movie Groundhog Day, in which a disgruntled TV reporter played by Bill Murray laments that he has to cover the same day every year. Punxsutawney’s owners allege that Phil is the only true “prognosticator” of the weather.

In Punxsutawney, the celebrations are led by an “Inner Circle” of people who take care of Phil year round. They lead the celebrations on that day wearing top hats and tuxedos.

According to Wikipedia, Phil is right about 39% of the time.
