UPDATE: 5:44 p.m. ET: And now the Heartland Institute will take down the billboards, according to The Washington Post.
UPDATE: 5:30 p.m. ET: The Congressman who was scheduled to speak at the Heartland Institute conference later this month now says he will NOT if the billboards are kept up. The Institute is considering taking them down.
Amanda Infield, a spokeswoman for Jim Sensenbrenner, emails: ” Congressman Sensenbrenner said [he] is not going to participate in the upcoming Climate Change Conference if the Heartland Institute decides to continue this ad campaign. It now sounds like they are going to take the ads down.”
Sensenbrenner contacted the Heartland Institute upon seeing the ads to express his concerns.
That billboard that you’re looking at above is a real billboard. It’s actually on display right now, over the Eisenhower Expressway in Chicago — according to the Guardian — courtesy of the Heartland Institute.
That’s Ted Kaczynski, better known as the “Unabomber” and for his 20-year mail bombing campaign. The Heartland Institute has never been shy about its stance on climate change, but this is insane. The message: You’re going to believe in global warming when one of the most notorious criminals in U.S. history does?
It won’t stop at Kaczynski, either. Here’s part of the Institute’s press release:
1. Who appears on the billboards?
The billboard series features Ted Kaczynski, the infamous Unabomber; Charles Manson, a mass murderer; and Fidel Castro, a tyrant. Other global warming alarmists who may appear on future billboards include Osama bin Laden and James J. Lee (who took hostages inside the headquarters of the Discovery Channel in 2010).
These rogues and villains were chosen because they made public statements about how man-made global warming is a crisis and how mankind must take immediate and drastic actions to stop it.
So, uh, why has the Heartland Institute decided to feature mass murderers and madmen on these billboards? Well, they’ve already asked that question to themselves:
2. Why did Heartland choose to feature these people on its billboards?
Because what these murderers and madmen have said differs very little from what spokespersons for the United Nations, journalists for the “mainstream” media, and liberal politicians say about global warming. They are so similar, in fact, that a Web site has a quiz that asks if you can tell the difference between what Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber, wrote in his “Manifesto” and what Al Gore wrote in his book, Earth in the Balance.
Just to make it clear, the Institute adds, “Of course, not all global warming alarmists are murderers or tyrants.”
From May 21 to 23, The Heartland Institute’s will hold its Seventh International Conference on Climate Change. There’s a U.S. Representative — Wisconsin’s Jim Sensenbrenner — who is scheduled to speak at this conference.
This isn’t the Institute’s first brush with controversy this year. In February, internal documents from the Heartland Institute leaked, revealing some of the group’s strategy.
