The Chinese trade balance widened to $31.7 billion in June. Exports held up, but imports fell short of expectations.

A slowdown in imports acts as a good indicator for a Chinese hard or soft landing. The data along with falling inflation certainly leaves China with room to ease monetary policy, which is likely after premiere Wen Jiabao said today that stabilizing growth is a pressing concern for China.
