John Gruber wants to set the record straight about all the iPad Mini rumours floating around.Gruber, the well-sourced Apple blogger behind Daring Fireball, confirms that he’s heard from his “little birdies” in Cupertino that Apple is working on a smaller iPad. However, he argues it’s time people stop referring to it as a 7-inch device.
“The rumoured device has a very specific screen size: 7.85 inches diagonally, 1024 × 768 pixels,” Gruber wrote in a post on his website. “That’s far closer to 8 inches than 7. In fact, it’s closer to 8 inches than the 9.7-inch iPad-as-we-know-it is to 10 inches.”
That isn’t just a matter of semantics. Gruber argues that a 7-inch tablet offers significantly less surface area than a 7.85 inch device, which should make the experience more similar to using a 10-inch iPad.He crunched the numbers and found that a 7-inch iPad would have just 45% of the surface area of the current iPad while a 7.85-inch iPad has 66% of the surface area.
That’s a pretty big difference, and one that might eliminate the need to sandpaper down your fingers to make them fit the smaller screen.
