Greek government spokesman Angelos Tolkas just said on Net TV that the referendum on the country’s second bailout will go ahead (via Bloomberg). The government believes that it will win Friday’s confidence vote, despite speculation to the contrary.

He said that the proposed referendum would most likely take place in January, and reassured everyone that the government wasn’t collapsing.

rumours and analysis have been flying back and forth all day, with defections and anger from PM George Papandreou’s own PASOK party making the referendum sound unlikely.

However, it looks as though the referendum is not yet off the table.

We still think that the PASOK party might prefer new elections to what could amount to catastrophe for the euro.
