In honour of Queen Elizabeth II’s 60 years on the throne, Her Majesty may have to eat one of the most disgusting fish dishes we have ever seen.According to the Wall Street Journal, Gloucester is sending a lamprey pie for the Diamond Jubilee this weekend. Gifting a lamprey pie to the monarch is a traditional gesture for the city, located 100 miles northwest of London.
Don’t know what a lamprey pie is? Lampreys are jawless with long bodies and a funnel-like mouth. They are known for their parasitical nature, sucking the blood out of other fish. Imagine this creature, but baked into a pie crust.
The controversy surrounding this year’s pie is that the lampreys will be imported from the Great Lakes near the U.S.-Canada border. Lampreys are usually found in the River Severn, a waterway that flows through Gloucester. Recently, lampreys have become scarce there.
Lampreys are considered a delicacy in Gloucester. The chef in charge of baking the pie is Gloucester city council’s commercial catering manager, David Hale.
Hale told the WSJ that he has been debating with the co-chef on whether they should bake the lamprey in white wine and caramelized onions, or onions and mace.
“We want to make sure the finished product is just perfect,” he said.
