  • “Glass” won the weekend box office for a third-straight weekend.
  • The movie took in $US9.5 million.
  • STXfilms’ “The Upside” now is the second-biggest all-time earner in the company’s history with a $US75.5 million domestic total.

Universal chose the right time of year to release “Glass.”

With little competition, the final chapter in the M. Night Shyamalan trilogy has owned the domestic box office for multiple weeks and Super Bowl weekend was no different.

The movie took in an estimated $US9.5 million over the weekend, giving it a domestic total of over $US88 million (its global total is just shy of $US200 million).

“Glass” matched the previous movie in the franchise, “Split,” with three straight weekends at the top of the box office. But with much lower figures for “Glass.” The take for “Split” in its third weekend in theatres was $US14.4 million.

In second for Super Bowl weekend with $US8.8 million is STXfilms’ “The Upside,” which also continues to do great business. The Kevin Hart/Bryan Cranston dramedy has a domestic cume of $US75.5 million after four weeks in theatres. That makes it the second-highest grossing movie domestically for the company in its history (2016’s “Bad Mums” is still the company’s highest grosser with $US113.2 million).

These two movies were the only ones to do consistent business at the multiplex in January, and that’s now bleeding into February. The only new release this weekend from a major studio, Sony’s “Miss Bala,” had no chance competing as it only took in $US6.7 million on over 2,200 screens.

Expect business to pick up a little this coming weekend as Warner Bros. releases “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part.”
