NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian has announced that blockbuster musical Hamilton will hold its Australian premiere in Sydney in March 2021.
At a press conference on Wednesday, Berejiklian said the Broadway hit is expected to bring 130,000 tourists to the state to see the production, which NSW Minister for the Arts Don Harwin described as “one of the world’s most successful musicals”.
“This is a huge win for NSW,” Berejiklian said in a statement. “Hamilton coming to Sydney demonstrates the global appeal of the harbour city.”
The premier took to Twitter to gloat about Sydney being chosen as the location for the Australian premiere over Melbourne, issuing a not-so-subtle dig at Victorian Labor premier Daniel Andrews.

The man behind the musical — which is based on the life and times of US Founding Father Alexander Hamilton — is writer, director and star Lin-Manuel Miranda. He issued this short message to Australians via YouTube on Friday:
The musical has won 11 Tony Awards, a Pulitzer Prize for drama and a Grammy for best musical theatre album. It will premiere at the Sydney Lyric Theatre in March 2021. You can join the waiting list here.
