The super creepy iPhone app Girls Around Me uses Foursquare check-ins to identify girls who are near you so you can essentially stalk your neighbourhood ladies. After a public outcry against the app last week, Girls Around Me was quickly pulled from the App Store.
Now, the app developer is saying we’ve all misinterpreted the app’s intentions.
“Imagine: you want to choose a place to spend an evening – I bet you’d prefer a place full of nice people (not ugly or rude),” developer Vlad Vishnyakov told Cult of Mac, debunking the consensus that the app is made to help stalk women.
In a previous statement to Wall Street Journal, Vishnyakov also said the app requires users to make themselves known on the app, therefore you cannot anonymously “stalk” anyone.
Though the app no longer exists on the iTunes App Store, coming out to say using the app to find a place full of “nice people” (or avoid “ugly” ones) doesn’t seem to make it sound any better if you ask us.
