Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich’s imploding presidential campaign is lacking for funds, not just staffers.Weeks after his top political and fundraising operatives quit the campaign, Gingrich is expected to report raising just $2 million in the second quarter, POLITICO reports.
With his campaign already $1 million in debt, Gingrich has resorted to using volunteer advisors to replace the paid staff that quit, and now flies commercial to campaign events.
Gingrich’s fundraising numbers trail even those of long-shot businessman Herman Cain, who raised $2.4 million in the quarter, a fact he blamed on negative press coverage of his campaign.
“The fact is a month of media barrage is painful, and it slowed a lot of things down,” Gingrich said earlier Tuesday.
While Gingrich garnered the support of seven per cent of likely Iowa caucus-goers in last week’s Des Moines Register poll, his campaign has been continues to lose momentum. With numbers like these, he may not make it to February’s first-in-the-nation caucus.
