With just hours to go to the Iowa caucuses and poll numbers that essentially put him out of the running Newt Gingrich is taking brutal aim at Mitt Romney.
During an interview on CBS’s ‘Early Morning’ this morning with a disbelieving Norah O’Donnell, Gingrich called Romney a liar directly and then hammered him for being disingenuous about his moderate political past and running a campaign in which he wants the American people to believe he’s “magically” turned into a conservative.
This line of attack may not help Gingrich’s chances today but it pretty succinctly sums up Romney’s weakest spots heading into the primary months and why he is currently fighting for the lead against Ron Paul and Rick Santorum.
Norah O’Donnell: You said of Mitt Romney, someone who will lie to you to get to be president will lie to you when they are president. I have to ask you, are you calling Mitt Romney a liar?
Norah O’Donnell: You’re calling Mitt Romney a liar?
Gingrich: Well, you seem shocked by it, yes…. because this is a man whose staff created the PAC and his millionaire friends fund the PAC and it’s baloney. He’s not telling the American people the truth. Here’s a Massachusetts moderate who has tax paid abortions in Romney care and puts Planned Parenthood in Romney care and raises hundreds of millions of dollars and appoints liberal judges and wants the rest of us to believe he’s somehow magically a conservative. I think he ought to be honest with the American people and try to win as the real Mitt Romney and not consultant-guided version that goes with talking points. I don’t think he’s being candid and that will be a major issue. From here on out from the rest of this campaign, the country has to decide: do you really want a Massachusetts moderate who won’t level with you to run against Barack Obama who, frankly, will just tear him apart.
