Nadja Drygalla, a German rower who had been competing at the London Olympics, has been sent home after rumours about a neo-Nazi boyfriend reached the German press.According to Deutsche Welle, Michael Vesper, director general of the German Olympic Sports Federation (DOSB), confirmed Friday that he had confronted the 23-year-old Drygalla over reports about neo-Nazi links.
Drygalla is rumoured to be dating a member of the “Rostock National Socialists” and who had contested a state election for a neo-Nazi party. The Local reports that the rumours have already cost her a place at a police training academy, and pictures of her with members of the far right have circulated online.
Vesper didn’t seem to confirm or deny the rumours, but said that Drygalla has decided to leave London to spare the German Olympic team from controversy,
The situation is especially divisive for Germany, which has seen wide-spread scrutiny of the far right community after the shocking triple-suicide and subsequent government scandal of a neo-Nazi terror cell last year.
Two other athletes have left London in somewhat similar circumstances. A Greek athlete was earlier banned from attending the Olympics after she tweeted a racist joke and retweeted members of neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn. A Swiss soccer player was also expelled for a different racist tweet.
