A cleaning woman at a German museum destroyed an important sculpture last week when she mistook it for a mess and cleaned it up, “destroying the valuable artwork beyond recognition,” according to AFP.It was really no surprise that the cleaning woman got confused.
The work in question, an installation called “When It Starts Dripping From The Ceiling” by Martin Kippenberger, is comprised of wooden slats above a trough filled with paint meant to represent dried rainwater.

According to AFP:
Taking it for an actual stain, the cleaner scrubbed the surface until it gleamed.
“It is now impossible to return it to its original state,” the spokeswoman said, adding that the damage had been discovered late last month and that the work had been on loan to the museum from a private collector.
Insurers had estimated that the piece, which is on display at the Ostwall Museum in Dortmund, Germany, was worth $1.1 million.
