Retirement seems to be treating the Bush family well, if the atmosphere at today’s unveiling of George W. Bush and Laura Bush’s official White House portraits is any indication.
“It was really great of you to invite us back to hang some family pictures,” Laura Bush said, thanking the Obamas. “Because as we all know, nothing makes a house a home like pictures of its former owners staring down at you.”
The former President was jovial, and slipped back into a jollier version of his old routine, joking around with the audience and tearing up at the mention of his father.
“I’m pleased that my portrait now brings an interesting symmetry to the White House collection — it now starts and ends with a George W,” he joked.
Addressing Obama, he added: “I am also pleased Mr. President that as you are wandering these halls, as you wrestle with tough decisions, you will now be able to gaze at this portrait and ask, ‘What would George do?'”
