In the middle of a controversy swirling around president and COO Dan Cathy’s comments against gay marriage, the environment inside Chick-fil-A stores has been very different than it used to be. Chick-fil-A employs many homosexual people in its stores, but things have been tough for them lately.
Lila Shapiro at the Huffington Post spoke to a variety of gay Chick-fil-A employees who revealed what has been going on at their jobs.
Here are some of the more poignant quotes from gay employees, many of whom asked to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation:
- “[It’s] constantly having people come up to you and say, ‘I support your company, because your company hates the gays. It really takes a toll on me.”
- “It seems like very few people have stopped to think about who actually works for Chick-fil-A and what those people’s opinions are. They are putting us in a pot and coming to support us or hate us based on something they heard and assume we agree with.”
- “Our managers have recommended just saying ‘Thank you for your business’ if a customer says they agree with Cathy’s comments, rather than agreeing or disagreeing with them. Now, anyone that works there is stuck with a stigma of being homophobic, even when many of us are far from it. At the end of the day part of our profits still go towards Dan Cathy, and subsequently, all the organisations he supports.”
They’re getting it from both sides. On one hand, they’re receiving homophobic comments in support of Chick-fil-A, and on the other, they’re being called homophobes because they work for Chick-fil-A.
One of that third employee’s co-workers, who supports gay marriage, has been verbally abused by protesters while handing out samples. They’d say things like “don’t give me that hate shit” and “I hope you choke on that chicken.”
