Fears that highly radioactive water has leaked into the ocean were confirmed today by Tokyo Electric. Previously TEPCO had denied a leak to the ocean, saying the cause of high concentrations of radioactive iodine-131 in seawater samples was unknown.TEPCO said there is an eight-inch crack at a pit in reactor #2 where power cables are stored, according to Kyodo.
Unfortunately they have to keep cooling the reactors with water, and so creating more contaminated water.
The solution may involve covering the cracks with concrete and then siphoning water into a large artificial floating island called a “megafloat.”
