REVEALED: The Guy Who Paid $854,000 For This Hand-Painted BMW

We were on hand when, earlier this summer, a bidder paid $854,000 for a BMW M1 racing car that was hand-painted by Frank Stella.

The much-hyped car stood out in a line-up of mostly classic cars at Bonham’s auction at Quail Lodge during Pebble Beach Classic Car Week. It was expected to sell for between $450,000 and $600,000.

Today we received a press release introducing us to the owner of the racecar.

It’s Jonathan Sobel, owner of BMW of Southampton and an avid car collector (why are we not totally surprised?)

According to the press release, the auto is the first such BMW art car to be acquired by a private collector. There are 18 art cars in total, the other 17 of which are owned by BMW.

Mr. Sobel, congrats on your purchase.
