Early yesterday morning hackers calling themselves the Script Kiddies — the Guardian says they are loosely connected to the group Anonymous — broke into the FOX News Politics Twitter account and posted a series of tweets claiming President Obama had been assassinated.
The hackers changed the password and it took until late afternoon for FOX to regain access to its account and erase the Tweets, reports the WSJ.
FOX now says it is working with Twitter to figure out how the hack happened. More ominously the Secret Service says it will also launch an investigation, as is customary whenever an individual threatens the president’s life. The Secret Service says they will do the “appropriate follow-up.”
Meanwhile, one gets the sense from the tone of the tweets — “@BarackObama shot twice at Ross’ restaurant in Iowa while campaigning, RIP Obama, best regards to the Obama family” — that their goal was to mock the news channel more than convince people Obama had actually been assassinated.
Disturbing nonetheless. And further proof that networks need to up their game when it comes to their digital presence and the security measure they devote to it.
