Ye Shiwen is the 16-year-old Chinese swimmer who has seen phenomenal success at the London Olympics, already netting two gold medals.Unfortunately, her success has been so impressive that it has caused widespread accusations of doping, which in turn were countered by accusations of hypocrisy and bias by Chinese observers.
Perhaps the most provocative response we’ve seen on the matter has come from Chen Zhanghao, who headed the Chinese Olympic medical team in Los Angeles, Seoul and Barcelona (and is thus himself linked to doping in Chinese swimming). He gave an interview with Australia’s Fairfax newspaper group where he hit back at Top US Coach John Leonard, who had insinuated that Ye had doped.
“Abnormal? America’s Phelps broke seven world records! Is he normal?” he told Fairfax. “I suspect Phelps, but without evidence, I have to recognise that we should be grounded in facts.”
“The Americans have made many extraordinary performances but without evidence we have kept silent,” Chen continued. He then alleged that the US had been making and using sports drugs since the 1940s.
“The Americans are very bad, they do a lot of evil,” he said. “But they don’t talk about themselves.”
