Life and death are a part of nature, but when these three tough fishermen came across a young brown bear screaming in terror and exhaustion as he was repeatedly swirled around a large eddy in the middle of a river, they couldn’t just let him die.
The men were fishing on the upper Kenai River, in Alaska. Mike Polocz, one of the men who saved the bear, told the Redoubt Reporter, “I was so close I could look into its eyes and they were wide open and filled with just sheer terror. I couldn’t watch this defenseless animal suffer. I was ready to go in after it if it went under,” he said.
He wrote on the YouTube video: “We watched helplessly as Momma bear decided to abandon this struggling cub in a whirlpool. It took about 15 minutes before we were lucky enough to pull him out of the current. This little guy was completely terrified, however upon making it to shore he let out one more cry for mum and we heard her coming back for him.”
They used a fishing net to push the screaming bear out into the current of the river, out of the eddy, to get him to safety.
“He was so physically exhausted and distressed that when I put the net near him, he tried to climb into it. I wanted to save him, but I didn’t want that. If it got in the net, I knew we would have to get him in the boat and possibly commit to physically putting him on shore, and that seemed way too risky,” Polocz said.
They did eventually get the little guy out of the swirling water, which sadly the video doesn’t show. He made his way to the shore and called out for his lost mamma, who came running up to find him. Awwwwwwww!
