The New York Post is reporting that hardware stores in NYC have seen an increase in rope sales over the past several months — and it’s not because men are suddenly conquering their to-do lists.Women are flocking to these stores to purchase rope, apparently because of the popularity of hit erotic novel 50 Shades of Grey.
“Oh, we’ve been selling rope to women,” Clifton Kahn, owner of Lexington Hardware, told the Post. “I’d say tenfold more rope than usual in the last six months. The women are definitely buying, and it’s still continuing.”
Lexington Hardware has been selling a lot of “soft cotton” rope — the kind you use for a clothesline, which costs $5 for 50 feet.
The novel has encouraged women to explore their kinky sides with materials used in the novel like rope, riding crops and handcuffs. NYC’s Babeland has seen its sales of kinky toys increase 30 per cent and an 81 per cent increase in traffic to its website, the Post reports.
There are also 50 Shades of Grey bondage kits online, if somebody feels too embarrassed to purchase one in stores. Or just check into the San Francisco hotel that’s now offering a package based on the book.
