With Padres hitter Yasmani Grandal down in the count 0-2 during the top of the eighth inning of a tied ballgame, a fan threw a paper aeroplane that may have cost the Diamondbacks the game.
Just as D-Backs pitcher David Hernandez was about to throw the pitch, a paper aeroplane flew into the batters box and caused a brief interruption.
Hernandez reset himself — and on the very next pitch — Grandal blasted a two-run homer, putting the Padres ahead 6-4. San Diego would go on to win 8-6, and Hernandez took the loss.
It’s impossible to know what would have happened if Hernandez had thrown the 0-2 pitch uninterrupted, but we think Grandal should at least change his intro song to M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes.”
