Have you ever noticed discrepancies among different hotel review websites? Why would a hotel listed on TripAdvisor receive a substantially higher rating than on Expedia or Orbitz?Well, according to Scott McCartney in The Wall Street Journal, it’s very possible that gouged ratings are the result of fake reviews.
McCartney writes that that there are review “mills” out there producing complimentary reviews for a fee, along with random people looking to make an extra buck.
And on TripAdvisor or Travelocity, where reviews are not verified, it’s easier for fake reviews to make it into the mix. Sites like Expedia and Orbitz only post reviews of the guests who booked hotels through their sites, according to McCartney.
While TripAdvisor told McCartney that the site has its own vetting system, the fact that it doesn’t verify reviews does seem to limit the site’s credibility.
