Facebook is now letting advertisers bypass its sales force to buy mobile-only “Sponsored Stories” through the ads API or Power Editor. While it had already signaled its intention to monetise its massive mobile user base, automated ad buys should help it capitalise on the shift to mobile.

As of January, Facebook has 425 million mobile users, up from 20 million three years ago. Currently, that number is closer to 500 million (it has more than 900 million users total). Likewise, mobile now accounts for one-third of Facebook’s traffic.

Facebook’s move will make waves in the mobile advertising market—U.S. mobile ad spend last year was smaller than Facebook’s ad revenues for the year.
