Social networking sites like Facebook are making it easier than ever to set up NCAA Tournament betting pools. One potential problem: They’re illegal.
People setting up betting pools that award a prize to the winner — and a cut to the organiser — are potentially violating U.S. Internet gambling laws, the Chicago Tribune reminds us. Online pools with participants in multiple states could also be violating interstate betting laws.
Are you likely to get a visit from the FBI? Probably not, unless things get out of hand. “The main issue we would likely face is if this is worth our resources to investigate,” FBI spokesman Ross Rice tells the Trib. Still, better safe than sorry — stick to the office pool.
