Eric Hippeau, one of Yahoo’s original board members, who stepped down last year, has summed up the company’s latest troubles in this tweet:The hapless company: Yahoo goes from mishap to catastrophe, all self-inflicted.
Earlier today, activist shareholder Dan Loeb pointed out that CEO Scott Thompson never got a degree in computer science as his official biography claimed.
But it wasn’t the lie that made Hippeau tweet. It was Yahoo’s response that the whole thing was an “inadvertent mistake.” This despite the fact that Thompson had the same fib on his bio back when he was the CTO of PayPal. Apparently, Dan Loeb did a more thorough background check than Yahoo’s board.
Hippeau was one of Yahoo’s founding board members in 1996, but was replaced by Akamai’s David Kenny in February 2011. He hasn’t been shy about criticising the company lately on Twitter — in March, he called Yahoo’s patent lawsuit against Facebook a “pathetic and heartbreaking last stand.”
