European markets closed mostly down, although off lows earlier in the day.A look at the scoreboard:

DAX: -0.5%
CAC 40: -1.3%
FTSE MIB: -2.1%
IBEX 35: -2.8%
FTSE 100: +0.2%

Rate cuts from the European Central Bank, the People’s Bank of China, the Bank of England, and Denmark’s central bank failed to reassure investors, but the close of trading in Europe could have been worse.

U.S. markets are moving higher, trying to throw off some small losses in early trading.
