The stat geeks at ESPN have come up with a 10,000-line algorithm designed to tell us, definitively, which quarterbacks are the best in the NFL.
The new stat is called “Total Quarterback Rating” (QBR, for short). It’s basically an improved version of the now-antiquated QB Rating.
It factors in “advanced stats, game situations, and relevant non-passing stats,” as well as traditional stats, to produce a rating out of 100 for each player.
Quarterback is perhaps the most important single position in sports, so it’s about time we started evaluating QB play with stats that aren’t 38 years old.
Unsurprisingly, Brady, Peyton Manning, Matt Ryan, Michael Vick, Rodgers and Drew Brees were the best QBs in the NFL last year according to QBR.
