An England rugby player just recorded a sprint speed faster than Usain Bolt

  • An England rugby and Leicester Tigers star has recorded a speed that could beat former Olympic sprinter Usain Bolt in a race.
  • Winger Jonny May reached a speed of 10.49 metres per second during an England training session this week.
  • May’s teammate said he’s “an absolute poacher with jet-heeled shoes” on.

Leicester Tigers winger Jonny May has recorded a sprint speed that is faster than eight-time Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt.

Ahead of an Autumn International match against Australia this weekend, May clocked a 40-metre sprint speed of 10.49 metres per second during an England rugby training session this week.

If May maintained that pace over a 100-metre distance, he would have beaten Bolt’s world record of 9.58 seconds by five hundredths of a second.

And May believes he can run even faster. “I’m still getting quicker and more powerful,” he said, according to the official England Rugby website.

“That takes a lot of hard work but alongside that it’s really important to develop your all round game as well.”

May’s teammates wax lyrical over the winger’s pace. England centre Will Greenwood called him an “absolute poacher with jet-heeled shoes.”

England coach Eddie Jones also believes the Tigers player can be the quickest winger in the world.

However, May is keen to play down comparisons to retired sprinter Bolt.

“It’s just a different discipline because with rugby when you sprint you go flat out and let it all go,” May told Sky Sports.

“The sprinters are trained to build into a run and hit speeds that we couldn’t get near. But those guys don’t have to hit rucks and catch high balls.”

May has the chance to test his pace on Saturday, when England take on Australia at Twickenham in London.
