Basque Separatist Arrested In UK For Plot To Kill Spanish King

British police in Cambridge arrested a member of Spanish separatist group ETA on a European arrest warrant Wednesday, according to the BBC.Eneko Gogeaskoetxea Arronategui allegedly hatched a plan to kill King Juan Carlos when he visited the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao by throwing grenades at him when he attended the museum’s opening in 1997.

The plan failed, and Arronategui has been on the run from 1997 until today.

ETA, the Basque separatist group Arrontegui is allegedly a member of, has the goal of making the Basque region in Spain and France into its own country. It is a paramilitary organisation that has been responsible for 829 deaths since the group’s founding in 1968. ETA is considered a terrorist group by the EU and United States.
