American luger Emily Sweeney suffered a terrifying-looking crash when her sled wobbled out of control

A scary scene unfolded at the Winter Olympics on Tuesday when Emily Sweeney, an American luge athlete, had a violent wreck.

On her final run of the day, Sweeney’s sled began wobbling out of control as she hit the notorious ninth curve on the luge track.

Her sled turned sideways.

And she eventually fell off the sled.

She slid all the way to a flat surface and grabbed onto her sled as people rushed to help her.

The crowd immediately fell silent, while her parents in the audience nervously awaited word on her status and her coaches buried their heads in their hands.

Though Sweeney was slow to get up, she eventually walked off. She later said she was OK, with only bumps and bruises.


The ninth curve on the luge track has given several lugers trouble already. While there haven’t been outcries about safety as there have been in some past Olympics, falls like Sweeney’s are likely to put other lugers and viewers on edge as they approach the turn.
