In a case possibly reminiscent of Trayvon Martin, a 75-year-old white Milwaukee man has been charged with killing an unarmed black teen.John Henry Spooner was arrested last week and charged with first-degree intentional homicide, the Associated Press reported Tuesday.
Darius Simmons was reportedly unarmed when Spooner allegedly shot him on the street outside their homes.
The two were neighbours.
Police are investigating whether Spooner and Simmons had a history of disagreements, noting that Spooner believed Simmons stole his shotguns.
After Simmons and his mother told Spooner they didn’t have his property, Spooner pulled out a gun and shot Simmons from about five feet away, the AP reported.
Spooner then reportedly fired a second shot at Simmons as he was running away.
“I looked out the door and saw the mother kneeling over boy at the curb, screaming, ‘my son!’ and the old guy was standing right over there by the stop sign with his dog, just waiting,” neighbour Toni Johnson told the AP.
As of Tuesday, Spooner remained in jail, according to the AP.
