Earlier this morning Fox News opted to bump breaking news coverage of Egypto to cover Rupert Murdoch‘s release of the iPad. Needless to say, Murdoch is head of News Corp which owns Fox News.
Brian Stelter noted on Twitter: “I’m getting shocked/appalled emails from TV news types.”
Fox anchor Neil Cavuto defended the decision thusly:
“We are continuing to monitor this event and I am already getting emails and bloggers saying ‘you are only covering this because your boss is Rupert Murdoch.’ That might have something to do with it, but this is a big event in and of itself how you look at news. I may remind those in news organisations that whenever Apple comes out with a product, whether they get top executives there or not, they seem to go full throttle on that product announcement because these tend to be cultural events that go beyond a given company. What Rupert Murdoch is trying to do here could go beyond a given company, a given stock, or a given population….”
