Brazil’s most iconic city, Rio, is in the midst of preparations for two of the biggest sporting events in the world — the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games. However a new scandal could cause a headache for the city’s Mayor, Eduardo Paes, just months after he was passed the Olympic flag by London Mayor Boris Johnson.
Brazilian magazine Veja has released secretly filmed footage that appears to show one of Paes’ rivals admitting he was bribed by Paes for 1 million Brazilian Real (approximately $500,000). Rio’s National Workers’ Party (PTN), Jorge Esch, says that Paes paid him the money to not field a candidate in the mayoral election, and that 20 others parties were also offered money for their support.
Paes is favourite to win the 2012 election and return for another term (which would end the year of the Olympics). One recent poll showed him getting 54% of the vote, with most other candidates receiving around 10%. His rivals are calling for an investigation which could see Paes removed from offices. Paes denies the claims, but says that an investigation is needed.
