The Philadelphia Eagles layed an egg last night, losing 30-24 against the Chicago Bears at home.Given how Philly played through the first five weeks of the season, this shouldn’t have been a shock.
But two straight wins, including a high-visibility drubbing of Dallas last week, made people (and us!) start to believe again.
That belief is once against gone after Philly’s problems resurfaced in big way last night.
The run defence was terrible. Matt Forte and Marion Barber gashed the D all night, and Philly’s linebackers failed to fill gaps or make tackles again and again.
The secondary couldn’t make a play on third down. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie was a mess. Cutler picked on him all night, causing him to have a fourth-quarter meltdown on the bench.
Michael Vick turned the ball over. Vick managed to protect the ball against Washington and Dallas. But he threw a costly pick in the red-zone last night.
The offensive line couldn’t keep the Bears D at bay. Vick is drastically worse when he’s under pressure. And Philly’s o-line didn’t do him any favours with some porous pass protection.
These were the Eagles’ suspected problem areas before the season. These are the problems that caused them to lose four of their first five. And they were glaringly obvious last night.
Philly now stands at 3-5. They can probably only lose one of their last eight games to have a shot to make the playoffs.
