Duncan Bannatyne is a British entrepreneur and star of the television series Dragons Den — think of him as a cooler Donald Trump or a meaner Richard Branson. He’s worth a reported £350 million ($571 million), yet since the 31st of July, he’s “living a nightmare.”
It began when Bannatyne has been receiving multiple violent threats from a twitter user named @YuriVasilyev_ .
And the threats aren’t just targeted at Bennatyne himself, Vasilyev has decided to pick on Bannatyne’s 25 year old daughter Hollie.
Here’s the original tweets:
The links took the reader to a website that included the message:
I’m looking for a £35,000 investment to stop us hurting your Hollie Bannatyne. We will bring hurt and pain into your life. We are watching her. She is very attractive. Want photos?
The Scottish-born millionaire responded to his 375,000 followers:
I offer £25,000 reward for the capture of the coward who calls himself @YuriVasilyev_ Double if his arms are broken first.
Some Twitter users thought that was going a bit far:
Just read it thought it was a bit irresponsible of @DuncanBannatyne. Some nutter will take it seriously,
Bannatyne replied: “Good I want you to.” yet later deleted the original tweet, instead offering £30,000 to anyone who gave authorities information that lead to Vasilyev’s arrest. He has now apparently been advised to stay out of the investigations by police.
At the time of writing, it doesn’t appear anyone has paid anyone any money in relation to the case. Another of Bannatyne’s daughters, Abigail, tweeted today that police have been involved since day one, and that there was “there was more than those tweets, much more”.
So who is Yuri Vasilyev? The man has says that he is Belorussian, but Bannatyne claims to have have traced his tweets to an internet cafe in Moscow. The Daily Mail has a picture of the suspected kidnapper from Twitter, and the same man seems pretty easy to find on Facebook.
But some are already claiming that the ease with which users have been able to find out details of the man may be the best indication that it isn’t him…
