Two Dubai-based developers have just announced a new design plan they think will save The World, the manmade archipelago that faces financial and physical ruin after interest waned in the economic downturn. The plan calls for the construction of “floating islands” that could manoeuvre between Dubai’s coast and the islands of The World, according to Arabian Business.

Each island would be completely self-sustainable and would cost between $23 and $27.5 million, the designer told

There’s just one problem with the plan: Nakheel, the developer in charge of The World, says it has never heard of it.

According to Emirates 24/7:

A day after a Dubai-based joint venture announced a floating villa project on Dubai’s The World islands, masterdeveloper of the project Nakheel says they have not been approached about the idea.

Called ‘Ome, the venture claims to have the answer to the need of a home for some of the “frustrated owners” of the 300-odd islands that form part of The World.

But Mohammed Al Mansoori of Nakheel told Emirates 24|7, “We are not involved and have not been approached for such concept.”

How awkward. It remains to be seen if this plan is truly dead in the water.
