Former DNC chair denies she said Democratic primary was rigged, tells Trump to stop ‘trolling’ her

  • Donna Brazile, the former chair of the Democratic National Committee, accused President Donald Trump of mischaracterizing her allegations that the DNC tilted the presidential primary in Hillary Clinton’s favour.
  • Trump wrote that Brazile accused the DNC of rigging the primary and of collusion with the Clinton campaign.

Donna Brazile, the former chair of the Democratic National Committee, is accusing President Donald Trump of misrepresenting her allegations that the DNC tilted the presidential primary in Hillary Clinton’s favour, at the expense of Sen. Bernie Sanders.

In an excerpt from her new book published in Politico, Brazile argued that the DNC was “unethical,” unfairly favouring Clinton, the eventual Democratic nominee for president, over Sanders, her rival in the primary. Brazile, who took over at the helm of the organisation after former chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz resigned in July 2016 following accusations that she was working to rig the primary in Clinton’s favour, said she investigated the issue and found very close ties between the Clinton campaign and the DNC.

On Friday morning, Trump capitalised on Brazile’s allegations, arguing in several tweets that the FBI should investigate Clinton and the Democrats for collusion.

“Donna Brazile just stated the DNC RIGGED the system to illegally steal the Primary from Bernie Sanders. Bought and paid for by Crooked H,” he wrote on Thursday evening, adding on Friday morning, “The real story on Collusion is in Donna B’s new book. Crooked Hillary bought the DNC & then stole the Democratic Primary from Crazy Bernie!”

Brazile responded to Trump’s tweets with several of her own later on Friday, arguing that Trump misquoted her and mischaracterized her accusations.

“Trump looks for a daily excuse to distract from his job. No, the primary system wasn’t rigged! States control primary ballots,” Brazile wrote. “Today’s lesson: Being quoted by Donald Trump means being MIS-quoted by Donald Trump. Stop trolling me. #NeverSaidHillaryRiggedElection”

In another tweet, Brazile said Trump translated her book “into Trumpspeak.”

But Sanders’s allies have also been using the word “rigged” — Our Revolution President and DNC-critic Nina Turner released a fundraising email about the DNC, saying it was “rigged all along.” Sanders’s former campaign chair told CNN that the behaviour was “egregious” and “undemocratic.”

And in a Thursday CNN interview, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren also said that she thought the primary process was rigged.

“This is a real problem, but what we’ve got to do as Democrats now is hold this party accountable,” Warren said. “When Tom Perez was first elected chair of the DNC, the very first conversation I had with him is to say ‘you have got to put together a Democratic Party in which everybody can have confidence that the party is working for Democrats rather than Democrats are working for the party.’ And he’s being tested now.”

Trump weighed in on Warren’s comments as well, calling her “Pocohontas,” a reference to her Native American ancestry.

“Pocahontas just stated that the Democrats, lead by the legendary Crooked Hillary Clinton, rigged the Primaries! Lets go FBI & Justice Dept,” he tweeted on Friday.
