Donald Trump’s favorability ratings with women are plummeting.
The latest Gallup poll published Friday showed that a whopping 70% of women polled viewed Trump unfavorably — the highest total since the real-estate mogul entered the presidential race last summer.
In contrast, only 23% of women had a positive view of Trump — the lowest total over that same time span.
The Republican presidential frontrunner’s support among men also took a dip during this time. In the latest survey, 58% of men said they had an unfavorable view of the candidate and 36% said they had a favourable one.
But the numbers among women are particularly striking, and they were echoed by other surveys. Fox News, Quinnipiac University, NBC News/Wall Street Journal, CNN/ORC, and ABC News/Washington Post polls all showed Trump’s unfavorability with women hovering around 70%.
“Those are stunningly unfavorable numbers,” Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University poll, told Politico. “It would be tremendously difficult for Donald Trump to win the general with those kinds of numbers.”
He added: “Historically, I can’t imagine anyone having worse numbers with women. But historically, there’s never been anyone like Donald Trump.”
The new low point for Trump’s favorability ratings with women came after he said women who have abortions should be “punished” if abortion were to be made illegal. He later walked back that statement, but swiftly received backlash from both Republicans and Democrats making the comment.
Trump has also made a number of disparaging remarks toward women both along the campaign trail — such as his ongoing crusade against Fox News host Megyn Kelly — and from before he embarked on his presidential run.
