Using data on an Apple Watch with cellular capabilities

A cellular-enabled Apple Watch allows you to use several features without having your iPhone nearby, which can come in handy during outdoor activities where carrying around an iPhone can be cumbersome (like during a run) or risky (on a boat).

An Apple Watch with a cellular connection and without an iPhone nearby has the same capabilities as an Apple Watch connected to Wi-Fi, including sending and receiving messages and phone calls, streaming music and podcasts, and checking the weather.

How to turn a cellular connection on and off on an Apple Watch

1. Open the Control Center by swiping up on the face of your Apple Watch.

2. Look at the Cellular icon. It looks like an antenna with signal waves.

3. If the button is green, you are using a cellular connection. If it’s white, your Watch is using a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection to connect to its paired iPhone.

4. Tap the Cellular icon to turn cellular on and off.

According to Apple, having cellular on for extended periods of time uses more battery power.

How to check the signal strength of your cellular connection on an Apple Watch

1. Open the Control Center by swiping up on the face of your Apple Watch.
