Doctor Who is coming back as a woman

The 13th Time Lord will be a woman for the first time, with the BBC announcing overnight that Jodie Whittaker will replace Peter Capaldi as Doctor Who.

The new Doctor was revealed following the Wimbledon men’s singles final, won by Roger Federer.

Whittaker, 35, from West Yorkshire, is best known for playing the grieving mother Beth Latimer in the ITV drama Broadchurch.

She will debut in the Doctor Who Christmas special as Capaldi makes his farewell.
