The gold medal match in women’s singles table tennis was supposed to be celebration of Chinese dominance, but a bizarre penalty at a crucial time left one competitor in tears.Down 6-2 in the fourth set, Ding Ning fell apart against fellow Chinese player Li Xiaoxia.

Ding was originally penalised just one point for an illegal serve. But the penalty sent her spiraling out of control.

It was sad to watch, and reminds you of just how much pressure is on these athletes.

She threw down her paddle in disgust

The judge wasn't having her antics

That's when she really broke down

She wiped the tears and sweat from her eyes

She took a deep breath, and tried to maintain composure

But just a few points later, Li beat her for the gold medal
