Aide Kara Ahern released a statement on behalf of the family, according to CBS: “As he leaves the hospital, the former vice president and his family want to again express their deep gratitude to the donor and the donor’s family for this remarkable gift.”

Cheney, 71, has suffered five heart attacks since the age of 37. He had been on a transplant list for 20 months before unexpectedly undergoing surgery    He does not know the identity of the donor.   “Although the former vice president and his family do not know the identity of the donor, they will be forever grateful for this lifesaving gift,” aide Kara Ahern said in a written statement to the AP.   More than 70 per cent of transplant patients live at least five years, though those odds aren’t quite as good for someone Cheney’s age.    Cheney didn’t receive any special consideration from his status. He waited more than twice as long as the median nine months at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Northern Virginia, according to The Wall Street Journal.
