30-eight per cent of app developers now use mobile advertising as the basis of their monetization efforts, according to VisionMobile’s Developer Economics 2013 tools report.
That means advertising is now the most popular revenue model for developers. A year ago, the most widespread monetization model was paid downloads. In this year’s survey, paid downloads slipped to 32 per cent.
There’s one overriding reason for mobile advertising’s growth in popularity. Many developers first found success with paid downloads or a freemium business model and came to advertising as a secondary revenue stream. But as mobile advertising develops and streamlines, more developers are finding it relatively simple to integrate with mobile advertising platforms.
That said, it is still difficult to make mobile advertising work. Despite being the most popular revenue source, mobile advertising had the least revenue-per-app of all the monetization models.
Other models, including freemium and in-app purchases, have also grown in popularity. Developer Economics surveyed 3,400 developers across the world for the report.
