When the Trenton Thunder made plans to wear special edition American flag jerseys for their July 3rd game against the Altoona Curve, they never thought Derek Jeter would have to don the silly thing too.But that’s what happened Sunday night.
The Yankee captain went 2-4 in his final rehab assignment for Trenton, but the headlines after the game were all about his patriotic ensemble.
“I was uncomfortable, so don’t judge my performance today,” Jeter told the New York Daily News.
That’s the risk you take when you get injured and have to play a few warm-up games in mine field of publicity stunts that is minor league baseball.
The Thunder have no specific plans for the jersey. But they had MLB representatives authenticate a number of game-used items that will either be displayed, auctioned, or donated at some point, according to a team spokesman.
The jersey seems like something that could show up on Pawn Stars 30 years from now. It’s a strange, one of a kind item that also has the distinction of being worn in the middle of Jeter’s hunt for 3,000 hits.
Jeter currently stands at 2,994 hits.
He’s now back in the Yankees lineup, and hopefully safe from anymore on-field fashion faux pas.
