File this one as scuttlebutt…
A Democratic Senator has been telling people that the Republicans may decide to throw in the towel on the Presidential race this Friday, after they see whether Mitt Romney has been able to score any points in the first debate, a source tells us.
If the first debate doesn’t change the polls, the theory goes, the second and third won’t either. And with Obama having opened up an impressive lead in many of the key states, the Republicans won’t want to throw good money after bad.
Instead, this story goes, the Republicans will give up on Romney and direct all their money and attention to winning some close Senate races, with the aim of taking control of the Senate. In some of the Senate races, apparently, more attention and money could swing the balance.
The possibility that the Republicans will give up on the Presidency and focus on the Senate races is actually causing some consternation among Senate Democrats, our source says. The Democrats would rather the Republicans kept fighting a losing battle in the Presidential race.
This story arrives on the same day a report appeared suggesting that Romney’s rich donors are starting to give up.
