Former England national football team captain David Beckham reportedly messages UFC star Conor McGregor about getting into fighting.
Beckham retired from football in 2013 having won major titles with Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, and Paris Saint-Germain.
The former midfielder is currently working on bringing a Major League Soccer team to Miami, but took time out from his soccer schedule to watch McGregor work out ahead of the Irishman’s unsuccessful foray into boxing, when he challenged Floyd Mayweather earlier this year.
According to McGregor, Beckham still messages him “on Instagram every now on then.”
Speaking to Entertainment.ie’s Mike Sheridan, McGregor said: “He was at the Ultimate Fighting Championship performance institute where I prepared for the Floyd fight [and] put up a post and tagged me in it.
“We were talking about it and he said, ‘It makes me want to get into fighting.’ I was like, ‘Say no more David… We can make that happen, you know we can make that happen if you want!’ So we had a little laugh about it.”
Together with his success on the field, Beckham is renowned for being a fashion icon — something McGregor is fast becoming.
McGregor has joined forces with David August and will bring out a new clothing line called August McGregor in 2018.
He clearly has respect for Beckham.
“David Beckham is an OG,” he said — an “original gangster.”
“An OG of the whole picture from a fashion standpoint that I’ve capitalised on and from a sporting standpoint — his was football, mine’s fighting.
“I have much respect for him and the empire he has built.”
McGregor’s next opponent could be interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson. It is unclear if Beckham will be cageside.
